‘Sandy’ is one of an ongoing series called ‘Virtual Portraits’ through which I am exploring ‘idealised’ representations based on portraits of friends and models. I am interested in the constraints imposed on modelling in the ceramic method of hollow building. In ‘Sandy’, the mass of the hair and the form of the torso are refined into simpler sculptural, or pottery-like forms, especially when viewed from the rear. The floral patterns suggest hair curls and hint at clothing and are impressed into the soft clay then inlaid with coloured jesmonite after firing.
