The theme is simply to do with promoting and using ceramic as a material for sculpture with a “decorated” surface. The works range from earlier large-scale sculptures built around my body to more recent smaller works which have a figurative subject or connotation.
Notes on ‘Beloved’ and ‘Cork Body’
Ideas, memories, dreams, fictions keep me working; and words. Words like ‘beloved’ which has such a gentle, innocuous, sentimental usage, but which may be underlain by a fixedness; a dominance; a possessiveness which indicates desperation and a quiet violence the subject being subjugated. I like to make forms which somehow echo their interior spaces like the clear, physical insinuation of a body – contained, as in ‘Beloved’. Alternatively as in ‘Cork Body’; the hollowness of a form may be characterised more prosaically, stressing the material properties of cork, weight, density, warmth, buoyancy; while the delightful possibility of floating away in it is simply suggested by its boat-like stance.
