Helen's Twin
Helen's Twin
Terracotta ceramic
H70 cm
2005
‘Helens Twin’ is one of an ongoing series called ‘Virtual Portraits’. Although based on portraits of friends and models, I am exploring the representations of historical and mythological characters. This double-headed piece refers to the story of Helen of Troy and her twin Clytemnestra. The same model’s face is used but with eyes open and closed suggesting different emotional reactions to their tragedy. Exotic floral patterns are impressed into the clay when leather hard.
Being hollow built the sculptures have immediate associations with the shapes of ceramic vessels, an aspect enhanced by the medium of terracotta, which along with the floral decoration suggest they may be well-sited in intimate garden environments or sheltered indoors. Since they are unglazed terracotta sometimes painted, with clear seal and wax finish, they are not suitable for full exposure to the elements.
