‘Jinny’ is one of a continuing series of sculptures which are based on portraits of a variety of people, some are friends and some are models. Every individual’s face is unique and yet everyone can be represented in an ideal way. I am trying to synthesise and individuality and an ideal.
The sculptures combine other elements or forms which are associated with ceramic vessels, functional objects or architectural features. The floral ornament is used as pattern to enhance the form, to suggest clothing or body adornment and indicate a cultured relationship with the natural world.
In this sculpture ‘Jinny’ I have incorporated the ceramic features of a hollow vase or urn. For example, looking at the back, there is a certain viewpoint where the simple abstract mass of the ceramic gives little evidence of the complexity of the figure on the front.
Her contemplative expression reflects the inner, contained volume of the vessel which is not an empty space but a full spiritual presence, peaceful and complete.
Being hollow built the sculptures have immediate associations with the shapes of ceramic vessels, an aspect enhanced by the medium of terracotta, which along with the floral decoration suggest they may be well-sited in intimate garden environments or sheltered indoors. Since they are unglazed terracotta sometimes painted, with clear seal and wax finish, they are not suitable for full exposure to the elements.
